World's Most Expensive Foods @,@

Food is one of the basic needs that all living things have in common. But all foods are not created equal, especially in terms of price, as the following list illustrates.

1. Hamburger

At $99, the Double Truffle Hamburger at DB Bistro Moderne in Manhattan gives new meaning to the term whopper. The burger contains three ounces of rib meat mixed with truffles and foie gras stuffed inside seven ounces of sirloin steak and served on a Parmesan and poppy seed bun, with salad and truffle shavings. For penny-pinchers and calorie counters, the Single Truffle version is a mere $59.

2. Caviar

The world's most expensive caviar is a type of Iranian beluga called Almas. Pale amber in color, it comes from sturgeons that are between 60 and 100 years old. A 3.9-pound container will set you back $48,750.

3. Pie

In 2006, a chef in northwestern England created the world's most expensive pie. Based on a traditional steak and mushroom pie, the dish includes $1,000 worth of Wagyu beef fillet, $3,330 in Chinese matsutake mushrooms (which are so rare that they are grown under the watchful eyes of armed guards), two bottles of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild at a cost of about $4,200 each, as well as black truffles and gold leaf. The pie serves eight with a total cost around $15,900, or $1,990 per slice, which includes a glass of champagne.

4. Bread

Forget Poilâne's famous French sourdough at $19.50 a loaf. In 1994, Diane Duyser of Florida noticed that the toasted sandwich she was eating appeared to contain an image of the Virgin Mary. She kept it for ten years (it never went moldy), before selling it to Canadian casino Goldenpalace.com for $28,000 in 2004.

5. Ice Cream Sundae

At $1,000, the Grand Opulence Sundae at New York's Serendipity certainly lives up to its name. Made from Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream covered in 23-karat edible gold leaf and drizzled with Amedei Porcelana, the world's most expensive chocolate, this indulgence is studded with gold dragets and truffles and topped with dessert caviar.

6. Pizza

Americans love their pizza. And at $1,000 a pie (or $125 a slice) they better be able to put their money where their mouth is. The Luxury Pizza, a 12-inch thin crust, is the creation of Nino Selimaj, owner of Nino's Bellissima in Manhattan. To order this extravagant pizza, call 24 hours in advance because it is covered with six different types of caviar that need to be specially ordered. The pie is also topped with lobster, crème fraîche, and chives.

7. Boxed Chocolates

At $2,600 per pound, Chocopologie by Knipschildt Chocolatier of Connecticut is the world's most expensive box of chocolates. The Chocolatier, opened in 1999 by Danish chef Fritz Knipschildt, also sells a decadent dark chocolate truffle with a French black truffle inside for a mere $250. But don't expect to just drop in and buy one on a whim . . . they're available on a preorder basis only.

8. Sandwich


Since the 19th century, the club sandwich has been a restaurant staple. But thanks to English chef James Parkinson, the von Essen Platinum club sandwich at the Cliveden House Hotel near London is also the world's most expensive sandwich at $197. Weighing just over a pound, the sandwich is made of the finest ingredients, including Iberico ham cured for 30 months, quail eggs, white truffles, semi-dried Italian tomatoes, and 24-hour fermented sourdough bread.

9. Omelette

For $1,000, this gigantic concoction comes stacked with caviar and an entire lobster encased within its eggy folds. Still, one might expect a seafood fork made of platinum and a few precious stones within to justify the price of a few eggs (albeit with a few added trappings). Nicknamed "The Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata," the world's most "egg-spensive" omelette is the objet d'art of chef Emilio Castillo of Norma's restaurant in New York's Le Parker Meridien Hotel. A smaller version is also available for $100.

10. Spice

Saffron, the most expensive spice in the world, has sold in recent years for as much as $2,700 per pound! The price tag is so high because it must be harvested by hand and it takes more than 75,000 threads, or filaments, of the crocus flower to equal one pound of the spice! Most saffron comes from Iran, Turkey, India, Morocco, Spain, and Greece, and in the ancient world the spice was used medicinally and for food and dye. Prices vary depending on the quality and the amount, but high-quality saffron has been known to go for as much as $15 per gram (0.035 ounces).

11. Cake

And the award for the most expensive food goes to . . . a fruitcake? Encrusted with 223 small diamonds, this cake (which is edible without the gems, of course) was for sale for an unbelievable $1.6 million in December 2005. One of 17 diamond-themed displays in a Japanese exhibit called "Diamonds: Nature's Miracle," the masterpiece took a Tokyo pastry chef six months to design and one month to create.

P/S: Wow.... i didnt even know there's such a thing exist. I heard about this, and i already thought that it was amazing.... lolz....

Ahhhh... the gem of indonesian food. this is authentic indonesian food. in the sense that it is flavourful and spicy ^^

Padang food has always been associated with spice and chillies in indonesia. we consider them to be the best when it comes to beef rendang and curry chicken. no one can beat them. not even my mum's cooking :(
Traditionally, padang restaurant has 1 distinctive feature. they love to stack plates with food that they sell, high on the front window of their shop. excuse me for bad description ;p anyways, this is one shop from jakarta. maybe from padang too. i'm not too sure. but, their food seem to sell very well in jakarta. hence, they open a branch in malaysia. maybe a hint that suggest the amount of indonesians in malaysia? ;p

to me, the Padang people (Padangese?) might have the same philosophy about food as that of a chinese. why? this here is a fine example. while, we can turn any part of a pig into a dish, they can turn almost any part of a cow into a dish. hence, u can find cow brain (which somewhat taste close to tofu), cow lung (usually deep fried) and intestine too at this place.

if you can manage to drive down here, you might as well get served in the padang way. it is somewhat similar to having sushi at kaiten belt. but here, the food comes in small plates to your table.

dont worry. you dont have to finish everything that they serve you. this is just how it feels like to dine in a padang restaurant. what's good here? chicken curry. that is one dish that is a benchmark, for me, to measure the goodness of a padang restaurant. if they can get this dish right, you can almost be assured of a good time dining ^^ padang's chicken curry is different from any chicken curry i ate all this long. the curry are more liquidish, but still has all the kick of a curry. yet it is subtle. next, is the beef rendang. beef rendang has to be tender and almost melt in your mouth. it cant taste like u're chewing a slipper. that is a big no no for beef rendang.
Those 2 are the benchmark (for me). once they get these dishes right, i wont object coming to that place again and again. some padang restaurant in indonesia, are more known for their delicious fish head curry than anything else. but that is in indonesia :)
my most memorable time of dining in a padang restaurant was during my 2nd year of high school (equivalent to form 5). 5 of us guys were staying at Puncak (a place like Genting Highlands), where the weather is cool too. so imagine eating something warm and spicy at a cool place..........................done imagining yet????????????? if you cant, imagine having bak kut teh at genting ^^ it is close to that

How to eat padang food according to d2e:
1. get heap of rice on your plate.
2. dont shy away from the curry, get em all.
3. get some chili, balado chili. (it is the red and green chili in a plate)
4. get your meat and veggie
5. dive in with your hands (of cos, dont forget to wash your hands 1st)
6. repeat until you cant move anymore.

1 Utama Oktoberfest

I was walking around in 1 utama when i saw this:


exchange 2 50 cents for a bottle of german beer? i am all for it!!!

so, here we are. at the oktoberfest. a German beer festival, held in Malaysia, for the third year in a row @,@ (how come I only found out about it now?) for more oktoberfest, go to wikipedia ^^ read and nurture your mind ;p

only 1 beer per person per queue. hence, the ticket :) the event starts at 5pm. but the queue? starts at 4.30 pm. my goodness. the event took place near the rainforest of 1 utama. so what happens here? first and foremost of all, the cheap german beer :) you have to wait in line for it. get your tix from the queue-guy and prepare your 1RM in 50 cents.

after a small task of queuing, we went to look for tables. sit and prepare for our meal. Supposedly some german style cooking. And what heaven it is!! There is no drink but beer here, and there is no meat but pork here. Double dosage of non-halalness @,@ i call this the double haram. pork and beer. this is truly 9th layer of heaven.

we were entertained by these musicians. who in the spirit of keeping oktoberfest real, play some german folklore too ^^ and after a few songs, they have this drinking song that they will repeat. maybe to test, whether u r sober enough to continue drinking ^^ the song ask u to stand up and lift up your glass 3 times @,@ really, i'm sure the song acts like a sobriety test ^^

this must be the dom-perignon of beer. its taste is close to wine, but with the amount of bubble of a beer. it smells nothing like beer. in fact, it smells wonderful. like flowers and fruits ^^ each bottle is sold for 15RM.

Yut Kee Kopitiam

Pork, pork, pork... how can that word doesnt sound delicious? I'm sorry if i sounded like inconsiderating person, but when it comes to meat, nothing beats pork. A beef noodle will taste a lot better with just a splash of porky oil when u cook the meat. A regular bean sprout dish will turn marvelous if you cook them in lard @,@ okay... i'll stop there before the health inspector comes :)

So yeah... this place, Yut Kee. It is supposed to have a long history. about 20 years? dont get me wrong. i'm not about being cynical or anything. but, how can a 20 year old kopitiam still survive in the modern days of starbucks, coffee bean and modern kopitiams? That's what makes this place all the more interesting.

I first read about it at masak-masak. Well, her blog is the first flog I ever stumble into anyways. And since the, it's just downhill. links beget links. reference begets more reference. I am really thrilled to see that I am not the only person alive that have constant craving for good food. Heck, I got criticized before for constantly craving good food. Dont they know that good food is the essence of a happy soul? -_- anyways, back to the topic. yut kee :)

For the history of this place, I'll just skip all the hassle of reading from other flog and posting here by giving the links :) here are others' take on the place: masak-masak, makan kings, a whiff of lemongrass, the travelling hungryboy and lots of cravings. Okay, that's enough linkage, i guess.

Getting here is actually easy peasey. Drive down to jalan dang wangi. There is no way you can miss this little stall on the corner of the street.

Or you can do it my way. Take the public transport ^^ take the LRT all the way to station dang wangi. being the tourist that I am. Wait a minute, I'm an expat, not a mere tourist ;p so yeah.. I took the LRT down to Dang Wangi station. and just work my way from there. this place is actually on walking distance. you can get here by walking for 10 minutes. If you dont know the way, just ask around for 'jalan dang wangi' or just be like a manic foodies and ask straight away for 'yut kee' ^^ teeheehee... Do it the Gandhi way, honesty is the best policy.

And how surprised I was to see this kind of crowd in this 20 years old kopitiam @,@

the great thing here was supposed to be the 'roti babi'. but when we got there, they were out of it @,@ and i traveled that far for their famous T.T so, i have to settle with pork chop :(

Jarrod & Rawlins

This place has been getting fantastic review from many other floggers. And last saturday, I finally managed to get there. Buahahaha... This time, i dragged another food junkie wanna be (AFJ-another food junkie) and a pretty hospitality student to go with me :) they insist that they remain anonymous. Rather, I insist ;p So, off we go from an indonesian-student-infested spot called sunway to lorong dungun.

I've gotten some rawlins sausage before. turns out that cold storage sells them in their non halal section. packed nicely in a box of 6 sausages. I used them to make pizza. non-halal pizza ;p

The plan in my head on that day was to hitch a bus to KL Central and take a feeder bus to lorong dungun, that would be the rapid KL, T634. That was the initial plan. When our bus reached KL Central, AFJ's tummy apparently has a mind of its own. It was already 11.30 am n the dragons in his tummy are declaring that it was already past feeding time. So, from there, we took the 'taxi berkupon' system. which costs us 9RM @,@ lolz... Well, all in the name of food. this is what we have to go through...

In the cab, I tried asking our nice chauffeur on the whereabouts of Jarrod & Rawlins. I shoudnt be shocked that all he did was stare at me as if I was speaking in another language. A language unknown to common men. But that doesnt stop us. Heck, I was even thinking. Well, worse come to worst, we can always ask around :) optimism just saves the day.

He let us down near wisma HELP. I was a bit reluctant about it, so I asked him to go further to a junction in front to relieve us. Must be the weirdest customer he had all year ;p so, there we were, 3 confused 'tourists' in the junction of a road, looking for passerby to ask for direction. Since it was saturday afternoon, I guess everyone was either off or out for lunch. The street was almost quiet, except for 2 guards that doesnt seem to speak malay or chinese, only an itsy english... So, we decided to walk around until we managed to find the sign that saves our lives. the road sign says, lorong dungun.

A short stroll after, we found the place!!! I was delirious that i forgot to snap some pics of J&R's signboard. dang.... anyways... we were simply amazed by the ambience. it was noon and our tummies were growling. waiting to be fed. this is some pics of the place.

I can slightly imagine having dinner here. good food, romantic ambience. really cant go wrong here if you were planning a romantic dinner for 2 :)

Everyone keeps saying about how porkalicious this place is. So, the first thing in mind that we have to check out is the deli counter. Hmmm... memory loss.. forgot to take pics of the 'sinful' deli counter @,@ noooo.....

Firstly, we choose the breakfast set. Not to be missed here. it comes with 2 sausage, 1 bacon, 2 sunny side up eggs, 2 baked tomatoes, orange juice and a choice of coffee or tea. really nice. they have so much confidence in their products, that it was grilled with very minimum seasonings. amazing!! simply amazing :) but the taste wasnt compromised. at all.

Second in our order was the duck breast salad. It was costly, 23RM. But with the amount of duck breast involved in this little scandal. I really dont mind :)

the last but not least, their gourmet products :) this should put a smile in anyone's face ^^ Pork Spicy Chili Sausage RM4.30 per 100g and the Dynamite Sausage at the price of RM5.30 per 100g.  This dish comes with a mashed potato (d'lish!!). creamy enough but not overpowering. And a lil mustard on the side.

The total bill came up to around 78RM. 3 hearty satisfying meal :) that's what i call a whole meal. lolz. I would definitly go back there  again. next time, we'll make sure we were there on weekdays for their lunch set ;p prized only at 23RM. appetizer, main course, coffee/tea. thanks to xiu long bao.

Khuntai, Revisited

After we had an amazing dinner, we came in again on the next day ^^ for more tomyamliciousness :) yay!!!

this time, lunch came for 4 came at 64RM. still a bargain! with so many delicious food. you really cant argue on the price :)
btw, the fish is amazing. the thai sauce gives off sour taste. maybe it's tamarind? but, i'm definitely digging it! and the service? wow!! there's a waiter standing by near the table to make sure that the fish dish is not dry... so, he keeps on pouring in the sauce :) i'm totally hooked!!
